Varanasi in December: Weather, Fog and a Comfortable 3-Day Itinerary

Plan Varanasi in December with practical weather and fog advice, hotel choices, boat timing, Ganga Aarti and a comfortable three-day itinerary.

Published · Tour Varanasi Operations Team

December brings a gentler daytime rhythm to Varanasi. You can spend more time walking through the old lanes, pause beside the river and explore Sarnath without planning the whole day around summer heat. Early mornings and evenings, however, can feel distinctly cold, and fog can change both the view from the ghats and the practical timing of a boat ride.

Our recommendation is to allow three nights if you want a comfortable first visit, keep the river outing flexible, and choose your hotel according to walking comfort as well as atmosphere. A two-night stay can work, but arrival and departure times then matter much more. This guide explains how to plan Varanasi in December without making every experience depend on a clear sunrise or a perfectly punctual arrival.

Is December a good time to visit Varanasi

December suits travellers who enjoy walking, cultural visits and a cooler climate. It can be particularly rewarding for a first visit combining the Ganges, Kashi Vishwanath, the old city and Sarnath. The trade-off is that a winter morning does not always deliver the golden sunrise seen in travel photographs.

Choose December for the overall experience of the city. Leave space for conversations, breakfast stops and a slower exploration of the lanes. A private programme is useful because the order of outings can respond to the day’s conditions and your energy. It still needs realistic travel time: a private car cannot remove the pedestrian approaches to many old-city hotels, temples and ghats.

For a comparison with other seasons, see our month-by-month guide to visiting Varanasi.

December weather and what the averages actually mean

The India Meteorological Department’s Varanasi climate table, using the 1981–2010 period, records a December mean daily minimum of 10.2°C and mean daily maximum of 24.9°C. These are historical monthly averages, not a forecast or a promise that every day will stay within that range. Colder nights and cooler daytime spells are possible.

The same table records an average of 18.4 fog days in December. That figure does not mean each affected day is foggy from morning to evening. It does explain why flexibility matters when booking an early river outing. Check the IMD Uttar Pradesh forecast close to departure and again during your stay.

For packing, think in layers. A warm outer layer, scarf, comfortable closed shoes and an extra layer for a river outing are more useful than clothing chosen only for the afternoon temperature. Ask the hotel about room heating, hot water and bedding before booking; do not assume an air-conditioning unit also provides heating.

How fog changes a sunrise boat ride

A December boat ride may offer clear light, soft haze or very limited visibility. No operator can guarantee a visible sunrise. When visibility is poor, the safe choice may be to delay, shorten, reschedule or cancel the outing according to the boat operator’s assessment and local instructions.

Keep a second possible morning available if the river is a priority. If departure is delayed, enjoy breakfast first and discuss a later outing when conditions improve. A daylight boat ride can still introduce the riverfront buildings, ghat steps and activity along the bank. Its character is different from sunrise, but it need not feel like a lost experience.

Avoid placing a boat ride immediately before an airport or train transfer. The pressure to finish on time makes a weather-dependent activity harder to manage. Before paying, confirm the boat type, permitted guest capacity, life jackets, boarding point, duration and the terms that apply if operations are restricted. Our sunrise boat guide explains the experience in more detail.

Where to stay in Varanasi in December

A riverfront hotel is a strong choice if your main pleasure will be spending time near the ghats. It makes a short riverside outing easier to fit around breakfast or a rest, and the setting can become an important part of the stay. Check the exact room category: a hotel beside the river does not mean every room has a river view.

The practical question is how you reach the property. Some ghat hotels involve narrow lanes, steps, porterage or a separately arranged boat transfer. Ask for the complete arrival plan, including what happens if a boat transfer cannot operate. Confirm the lift situation and the steps between the entrance, your room, the restaurant and any terrace you hope to use.

Assi can suit guests who enjoy a neighbourhood base towards the southern ghats, while hotels in Cantonment or Nadesar may offer more straightforward vehicle access. These choices mean travelling to the river for outings. For guests with mobility limitations, easier transfers and a suitable room can be more valuable than a terrace photograph.

Use our guide to Varanasi hotel areas to decide which compromise suits you. For a December trip, add heating and hot-water arrangements to the usual checks on location, access and room comfort.

A comfortable three day December itinerary

The following plan works best with arrival before Day 1 and three nights in Varanasi. It gives you two unhurried sightseeing days and keeps the departure day clear. If you arrive on Day 1, shorten that day according to your actual arrival time; do not try to recover every missed visit after a delayed journey.

Day Main plan Room for adjustment
Day 1 Old-city introduction, planned Kashi Vishwanath darshan, rest and evening Ganga Aarti Shorten the walk if travel has been tiring.
Day 2 River outing when permitted, breakfast, then Sarnath Reorder the morning around visibility and confirm museum opening.
Day 3 Breakfast, packing and departure transfer Keep this day free of sightseeing and fixed river bookings.

Day 1 Old city temples and evening Aarti

After breakfast, explore a manageable section of the old city with your guide. The interest lies in its small details: flower sellers, neighbourhood shrines, courtyards and the movement of people going about their day. Agree the walking distance in advance, especially if your party includes older guests or children.

Place Kashi Vishwanath darshan around the arrangement confirmed for your visit. Temple entry, security, belongings and queue procedures must follow the administration’s current requirements. Avoid assuming that a guided tour or a hotel booking automatically provides priority access. Our Kashi Vishwanath planning guide is a useful starting point for these questions.

Return for lunch and a proper rest before the evening. For an ordinary December evening, we generally recommend an appropriate land-based Ganga Aarti arrangement for guests who want a closer experience of the ceremony. Confirm the meeting point, seating and approach rather than treating “Aarti included” as a complete description. Carry a warm layer and allow time for the return through the lanes.

The choice of a ghat, reserved seating or another viewpoint is explained in our Ganga Aarti guide. Aarti is worship: follow the organisers’ instructions and keep photography considerate.

Day 2 The river and Sarnath

Begin with the river outing only if visibility and operations allow. Your guide or coordinator should confirm the reporting time and boarding arrangements. After the outing, return for breakfast and a break. A winter itinerary is more enjoyable when it does not turn an early start into an uninterrupted full day outdoors.

Give Sarnath a separate, substantial sightseeing block. Explore the archaeological area and selected Buddhist sites at a pace that allows your guide to explain their significance. The museum adds an important view of the sculpture and objects discovered here, including the Lion Capital of Ashoka.

The official tourism listing for Sarnath Museum currently states opening from 10 AM to 5 PM, with Friday closure. Reconfirm before travel and move the Sarnath visit to another day if the museum is a priority. Our Sarnath guide helps you plan the wider visit.

If the river outing is postponed, discuss whether it can be moved to another available period. Do not automatically add it to departure morning. A fourth night is worthwhile if boating, temples, Sarnath and an artisan visit all matter equally to you.

Day 3 A clear departure day

Have breakfast, pack and leave enough time for the hotel’s checkout and final approach to the vehicle. At a ghat hotel, moving luggage to the permitted pickup point is part of the transfer. Confirm porterage or any other agreed assistance beforehand.

Keep sightseeing off this day. Winter visibility and traffic make it sensible to leave a buffer, and the correct departure time depends on your flight or train, hotel location and operating conditions. Share the exact station name and train details: Varanasi has several railway stations, so “Varanasi station” is not precise enough for a transfer booking.

Winter food and an artisan visit

A December visit can include a few well-chosen local food stops. Malaiyo is a delicate milk-based sweet associated with the cooler season; availability varies by vendor and day. Ask your guide what is being freshly prepared, mention dietary requirements and choose portions that suit you. Kachori-sabzi or another breakfast stop can fit naturally into a short old-city walk.

Food should be an enjoyable part of the route, not another demanding schedule. Use our Varanasi food guide to choose a few things that interest you. The Ministry of Tourism’s Varanasi overview also introduces the city’s food and craft traditions.

A weaving visit is another useful addition when you have a free afternoon or an extra night. Ask to see a working process and hear from the people practising it. What is being woven will depend on the workshop’s work that day. A visit should allow questions about materials, technique and time, with no obligation to purchase.

Christmas and New Year planning

If you are travelling around Christmas or New Year, confirm your preferred room category and key services early. Ask whether the hotel has a minimum stay, compulsory dinner, special cancellation terms or an event that affects noise and access. These conditions vary by property and date; a quotation for another week should not be treated as valid for your holiday stay.

Do not assume that New Year brings a particular public fireworks display, boat party or riverside celebration. Book a named, confirmed programme if that is important to you. A normal December visit also does not include Dev Diwali’s mass illumination of the ghats. That festival follows the Hindu calendar and requires its own date-specific arrangements; see our evergreen Dev Diwali guide.

Costs and what to confirm in your quotation

Ask for an itemised quotation based on your dates, guest numbers, hotel and priorities. Clarify accommodation, airport or station transfers, vehicle duties, guide hours, boat arrangements, Aarti seating, temple services, entrance tickets and applicable taxes. If your hotel is already booked, Tour Varanasi can plan the ground services around it.

Our Varanasi tour cost guide gives useful reference figures, but holiday dates and particular services still need confirmation. Also agree how a postponed boat outing would affect the programme and charges. A clear booking confirmation should explain the service you have reserved and the relevant change or cancellation terms.

Frequently asked questions

Will I definitely see sunrise from the boat

No. Fog, cloud and river restrictions can affect the outing and the view. Book for the river experience, allow flexibility and let operating safety determine whether and when the vessel departs.

Is December suitable for older guests

It can be, with suitable accommodation, warm clothing, shorter walks and rest between outings. Discuss steps, boarding and walking comfort before booking. A car transfer does not provide vehicle access to every temple or ghat.

Are two nights enough

Two nights can cover selected highlights when arrival and departure times are favourable. Three nights provide a more comfortable margin, and an extra night helps if you want a second chance for the river alongside craft and food experiences.

Should I book a ghat hotel

Choose a ghat hotel for river atmosphere and convenient access to nearby ghats, after checking the steps and arrival arrangements. Choose a property with easier vehicle access if transfers and reduced walking are the main priorities.
