Earthen lamps illuminate the Varanasi ghats beside the Ganges during Dev Diwali

Dev Diwali in Varanasi

Plan Dev Diwali in Varanasi with ghat hotels, reserved double-decker Bajras, fireworks, Chet Singh Ghat shows, festival prices and walking advice.

Published · Tour Varanasi Operations Team

Dev Diwali in Varanasi is the evening when the Ganga riverfront fills with the glow of earthen lamps. From a boat, you see illuminated steps rising towards temples and old buildings; on the ghats, you hear bells and prayers while families gather beside the water. It is a remarkable time to visit Kashi, provided the journey is planned around the festival.

Our strongest recommendation is to stay at a suitable ghat hotel and settle in at least one day before Dev Diwali. Reserve your boat in advance, keep the festival afternoon free, and expect walking wherever vehicles cannot enter. A private car is useful, but it cannot take you through a police barricade.

This guide explains what happens during Dev Deepawali, how our usual evening programme works, where to stay, why prices rise, and what to expect from a private boat or Bajra booking. It also explains the practical limits that matter once you are on the ground.

What Dev Diwali celebrates

Dev Diwali, also written Dev Deepawali or Dev Deepavali, means the Diwali of the gods. It is associated with Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, roughly a fortnight after Diwali. Its Gregorian date changes each year, so confirm the locally announced celebration date before booking travel.

In Hindu tradition, the festival is connected with Lord Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura. Devotees also believe that the gods descend to bathe in the Ganga. Lighting diyas, offering prayers and bathing in the river express this faith. These traditions are described by Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism’s travel portal.

The distinction between Diwali and Dev Diwali matters when choosing dates. Visiting Varanasi for the main Diwali holiday does not automatically mean you will see the large Dev Deepawali illumination of the ghats. They are separate occasions, with separate travel arrangements.

What happens throughout the day

Lighting earthen lamps for Dev Deepawali
Lighting diyas is part of the festival’s shared religious observance.

The religious observance begins well before the evening boat programme. Pilgrims come for Kartik Purnima bathing and prayers, while people prepare lamps along the riverfront. The festival belongs to the city’s residents and worshippers as much as to visitors.

As dusk approaches, rows of diyas are lit across the ghat steps and other sacred spaces. The changing light is part of the experience: buildings visible in daylight become silhouettes, the lines of lamps grow brighter, and reflections spread across the water. Akashvani’s account of the festival describes the lamps across ghats, temples and rooftops.

Ganga Aarti adds the sound of chanting, bells and conches to the evening. From a boat, you experience the wider riverfront and may watch the ceremony from an authorised position on the river. The view of individual priests depends on distance, other vessels and the position permitted that evening.

Guests can watch the fireworks from the boat, and the sound-and-light or projection show at Chet Singh Ghat is another highlight of the river view. From a suitably positioned boat, you can enjoy the illuminated facade and fireworks without moving through the crowds on the steps. The 2025 celebration featured a 25-minute Kashi Katha projection at Chet Singh Ghat and synchronised green fireworks. The programme, show timings and permitted boat positions can change each year, so we confirm the arrangements for your evening rather than promise an uninterrupted view from every part of the river.

Our usual Dev Diwali evening timetable

For Tour Varanasi guests, the Dev Diwali evening is normally planned from around 4:00 PM until approximately 8:30 PM, with roughly four hours aboard the boat. Reporting, boarding and disembarkation account for the difference between the programme window and time on the water.

This is our usual planning framework. It is not a universal start and finish time for every religious observance, boat operator or public event.

Part of the evening What to expect
Before 4:00 PM Complete the journey to the agreed meeting point, including the walk from your hotel or vehicle.
Around 4:00 PM Meet the local representative, receive boarding instructions and prepare to board.
Late afternoon into dusk Begin the river experience as daylight fades and the ghats are illuminated.
During the evening View the lamps, riverfront and Aarti from permitted positions; include announced public displays where the route and timing allow.
Around 8:00–8:30 PM Return and disembark, subject to river movement and the evening’s programme.
After disembarkation Walk back to your ghat hotel or designated vehicle meeting point.

The boat may cruise, slow down or wait in an authorised area. Four hours aboard does not mean four hours of uninterrupted movement.

Do not arrange dinner, a train or an airport transfer on the assumption that you will be inside your hotel by 8:30 PM. The return walk and road journey are additional, and can take longer as crowds leave together.

Why we recommend staying at a ghat hotel

For a visit centred on Dev Diwali, a well-chosen hotel on the ghats is our first recommendation. Being settled near the river before the busiest period gives you a much easier base for the evening.

You can eat, rest and prepare nearby, then follow the agreed route to your boarding point. After the boat ride, returning to a nearby hotel can reduce your dependence on roads that are still congested or restricted. A suitable terrace or river-facing space may also let you enjoy part of the atmosphere from the property.

Choose the exact hotel carefully. “Near the Ganges” can mean a riverfront building, a room in a narrow lane, or a property that still requires a considerable walk. A river-view room does not necessarily include access to a festival terrace or a clear view of the main Aarti.

Before confirming, ask about the route from the road to reception, steps, lift access, luggage assistance, meals and the distance to your boat’s boarding point. If the hotel offers a boat transfer, its availability and hours need to fit your arrival; a normal transfer service cannot be assumed to operate throughout the festival evening.

For guests with limited mobility, we check the physical approach before recommending any ghat hotel. A beautiful location is useful only when you can comfortably enter and leave it. Our guide to where to stay in Varanasi explains the wider choice of hotel areas.

Arrive at least one day before the festival

We strongly advise arriving and settling into your hotel at least a day before Dev Diwali. This gives you time to recover from travel, understand your surroundings and discuss the next day’s meeting arrangements without rushing.

It also allows us to place other priorities, such as Kashi Vishwanath darshan or a regular evening Aarti visit, outside the main festival programme. You should not need to choose between reaching your boat and finishing an overfilled sightseeing list.

If you must arrive on the festival day, choose an early arrival and allow a generous margin to reach the hotel. Morning arrival is preferable to an afternoon connection. Flight or train arrival time is only the beginning: baggage collection, the road transfer, diversions and the final approach to a ghat hotel all take time.

An early arrival does not automatically provide an early room check-in. Confirm whether the hotel can receive your luggage and provide somewhere to wait if the room is not ready. Keep the rest of that day simple and be prepared before the agreed reporting time.

Vehicle restrictions and the walk to the ghats

At many ghat approaches, guests should plan for around one kilometre or more of walking between the designated vehicle parking or stopping point and the riverfront. This is a working estimate, not a fixed maximum. Barricades, crowds and the chosen boarding ghat can increase the distance; vehicles may also be held before their usual parking area.

The return is just as important as the approach. Guests must walk back to the permitted vehicle meeting point after the programme. A driver cannot collect you from the ghat if the road remains closed. Having a private vehicle waiting does not remove this walking section.

Where guiding or escort assistance forms part of your booking, the representative can help you follow the agreed route and locate the vehicle. Guests still need to cover the distance on foot unless a specific, permitted alternative has been arranged.

Confirm the meeting point before boarding. Save your driver’s number, the vehicle details and a recognisable landmark. Keep your group together after disembarkation, and follow instructions if a different exit is opened.

Published traffic plans demonstrate how extensive these controls can be. Dainik Jagran’s report of the 2025 plan described multiple diversions and separate parking arrangements. The applicable plan must be checked for each festival.

Why we do not recommend Tempo Travellers or coaches for the evening

We do not recommend Tempo Travellers or coaches for transfers to the Dev Diwali ghats. These larger vehicles are commonly stopped much farther away, creating longer walks and a more difficult return for the group.

A coach can work for other parts of a journey, including intercity travel. The festival evening needs a separate movement plan. Where appropriate, we recommend smaller cars for the permitted road sections and organise the group around clear meeting points.

Smaller vehicles do not have unrestricted access either. Their advantage is practical flexibility where movement is allowed; they cannot cross a closure simply because they carry hotel guests.

For groups, the transport plan should be agreed before confirming the programme. Consider the slowest walkers, the size of the party and the time needed to assemble everyone after the boat ride. A single departure instruction for a large group is not enough if people are returning through different lanes.

How visits by the Chief Minister or Prime Minister can affect access

A visit by the Chief Minister, Prime Minister or another protected dignitary can lead to additional diversions, temporary road closures and restrictions around particular ghats. It may also affect the timing or route of permitted river movement.

This does not mean such a visit takes place every year. It means that the plan must remain flexible if one is announced.

Your original drop-off point, boarding approach or return route may need to change. Follow the local team’s revised instructions even if a navigation app continues to show the usual road.

No hotel reservation, private boat booking or guide arrangement overrides a security restriction. For this reason, we avoid promising unrestricted access to a particular ghat or an unchangeable sailing route. Reporting from the 2025 festival described controlled traffic and designated river lanes alongside the Chief Minister’s visit.

Why we recommend a double decker Bajra for Dev Diwali

For Dev Diwali evening, Tour Varanasi strongly recommends a properly operated double-decker Bajra. Its raised viewing deck offers a broader perspective of the illuminated ghats, fireworks and the Chet Singh Ghat sound-and-light show when the vessel is in a suitable authorised position. The additional deck space can also make the evening more comfortable for your group.

We do not recommend choosing a small boat simply to save money on this exceptionally busy evening. Small, low-sided boats can be vulnerable to the wakes of cruises and other large vessels. In congested water, a collision or water entering the boat can create serious risks, including capsizing or sinking. For this festival, our preference is a suitable Bajra with an experienced crew and properly managed passenger numbers.

A Bajra is a larger traditional riverboat, but layouts and facilities vary. When booking, specifically request the double-decker arrangement and confirm upper-deck access, railings, steps, seating and permitted occupancy. The name alone does not confirm a toilet, catering or a particular layout.

Safety depends on the individual vessel, its condition, crew, loading and operation; two decks alone do not make a boat safer. We recommend a licensed, well-maintained vessel with life jackets for every guest, including correctly sized jackets for children. Follow the crew’s seating and movement instructions, and avoid crowding one side or the upper deck. Your safety takes priority over getting closer to a show or securing a photograph.

Arrangement What to clarify before booking
Double-decker Bajra — our preferred choice Authorised capacity, upper-deck access and occupancy, railings, life jackets, seating, facilities and experienced crew.
Private motorboat Vessel size and suitability for festival traffic, permitted guest numbers, life jackets, boarding point and duration. Small boats are not our preferred option for this evening.
Shared Bajra seat Confirm a double-decker vessel if requested, total occupancy, deck allocation and the common departure and return schedule.
Cruise ticket Named vessel, deck access, safety arrangements, boarding requirements and stated inclusions.

The word “private” means your party has the agreed exclusive allocation. It does not mean the river is private, that the boat can stop anywhere, or that the crew can ignore instructions.

For any vessel, ask how the return works if someone becomes uncomfortable. Do not assume that immediate disembarkation at the nearest ghat will always be possible.

Our pre-reserved boats and Bajras

Tour Varanasi has specially pre-reserved boats and Bajras for Dev Diwali, which we can offer to our guests on a guaranteed booking basis at special rates from our advance arrangements.

Once your booking is accepted and confirmed in writing, the agreed allocation is reserved for your party. This gives you a confirmed arrangement before you reach Varanasi, with the vessel category, guest numbers and inclusions clearly recorded.

The guarantee concerns your reserved allocation. Sailing remains subject to official permission, river conditions and safety instructions applicable to every operator. If an authority changes the programme, the arrangement will be handled under the terms stated in your confirmation.

Our reserved inventory is limited. Send your dates, party size, hotel and any walking or boarding needs early so we can offer a suitable option. We will specify whether the quotation covers the whole vessel or individual seats, and whether guiding, transfers, refreshments or other services are included.

A special rate should still be compared against the complete arrangement. Boat size, exclusivity, duration, deck access and assistance all affect what you receive.

Why hotel and boat prices rise so sharply

Dev Diwali concentrates demand for rooms, river views and boats into a short period. A normal sightseeing budget is therefore a poor guide to the cost of the festival visit.

From our local operating experience, hotel quotations during the peak festival dates can approach five to six times the property’s usual rate. Boat and Bajra charges can be more than ten times ordinary-day charges, particularly for sought-after private arrangements.

These are possible festival premiums, not a fixed multiplier applied by every supplier. The hotel, room category, booking date, vessel and inclusions all matter. A four-hour festival allocation also differs from a short ordinary-day river trip.

Historical reporting confirms that sharp increases are a recurring feature. The Times of India’s report on a previous Dev Deepawali documented large hotel premiums and boat prices many times normal rates. Those historical rupee figures should not be used as a current quotation.

Request a written total showing taxes, meals, transfers, guiding and boat arrangements separately. Ask about any hotel minimum stay, payment dates and cancellation conditions before confirming. We provide the special rate applicable to our available reserved boat or Bajra inventory for your party.

Ganga Aarti and the festival river view

Ganga Aarti on the Varanasi ghats
A close view of Ganga Aarti. A festival boat offers a different perspective from the river.

For a regular evening Ganga Aarti visit, we usually favour a suitable land-based viewing arrangement. A balcony or reserved seat can bring you closer to the ceremony, while Sankalp participation offers a different religious experience when available and appropriate.

Dev Diwali calls for a different emphasis. The illuminated riverfront, fireworks and the Chet Singh Ghat sound-and-light show make a boat particularly appealing for the overall festival view. Our preferred arrangement for this evening is a properly operated double-decker Bajra, with its elevated perspective and more spacious deck layout.

Do not expect a boat booking to include participation in the Aarti, a seat beside the priests or uninterrupted close-up views. Other boats, distance and permitted positions affect what you see and hear.

If experiencing the ceremony closely is important, plan an ordinary Aarti visit on another evening. Our Ganga Aarti guide explains the choices. Combining that experience with the Dev Diwali river programme gives each occasion the time it deserves.

What to confirm for four hours aboard

Comfort matters during a long evening on the water. Before selecting a vessel, confirm the type of seating, whether the deck is open or covered, and whether a toilet is available. Many smaller boats do not have one; never assume that a large or decorated boat includes every facility.

Have a meal and use a washroom before reporting. Carry drinking water and check whether refreshments are included. If you require food at a particular time, discuss it in advance rather than relying on being able to buy something after departure.

Bring a light layer for the river breeze, comfortable footwear for steps and a charged phone. Keep baggage compact so boarding and seating remain manageable. Carry any personal essentials you need for the whole programme.

Wear the life jacket provided and follow the crew’s instructions, including when taking photographs or moving between seats. Passenger limits must be respected. For children, request correctly sized life jackets when booking. These precautions are consistent with the safety measures described in reporting on the 2025 festival.

Planning for older guests and families

Dev Diwali can be rewarding for older travellers, but the plan must reflect their actual walking, standing and boarding comfort. Tell us about difficulty with steps, balance, uneven surfaces or long periods away from a washroom.

A ghat hotel may reduce the evening’s road travel, yet its approach can still involve stairs. A Bajra may offer more space, but reaching its deck may require steps. Neither choice automatically makes the visit accessible.

For a guest who cannot manage the approach to a boat, an appropriate hotel terrace may be a better way to enjoy the illumination. Confirm the view, access, seating and any separate charge before booking.

For families, keep children close during the approach and return walk. Set a meeting plan, travel with essential snacks where permitted, and allow time for an unhurried dinner afterwards. We prefer a comfortable, realistic experience over adding activities that leave the group exhausted before the lamps are lit.

A practical three night visit

First day — arrive and settle. Reach Varanasi the day before the festival, complete your hotel transfer and rest. If arrival time permits, take a gentle orientation walk or attend the regular Ganga Aarti. Keep the evening flexible after a long journey.

Second day — Dev Diwali. Plan only a light morning. Enjoy an early lunch and return to the hotel with enough time to prepare. Follow the agreed meeting instructions for the afternoon boat programme, then return to your hotel after disembarkation. We do not recommend an excursion to another city on this day.

Third day — explore Varanasi at a comfortable pace. Allow for a slower start after the festival. Arrange Kashi Vishwanath darshan, Sarnath or a cultural experience according to your interests and the local situation. A private sunrise boat on a separate morning can be added if river operations permit and you want the contrast with the festival night.

Fourth day — depart. Leave a sensible margin for your airport or railway transfer. Your exact sightseeing order should follow your arrival time, hotel location and priorities.

Our three-day Varanasi tour provides ideas for the sightseeing portion; Dev Diwali arrangements and festival hotel rates require a separate quotation.

What you should and should not expect

Expect a shared city celebration, crowds, waiting and some walking. Even a carefully organised private programme takes place within a busy public event.

Do not expect all lamps to be lit at one exact minute or the riverfront to look identical from every position. Your view changes with the route, distance and surrounding vessels.

Do not assume a boat will cover every named ghat, stop directly in front of the main priests or make repeated landings. The permitted route and river traffic determine movement.

Do not assume fireworks, a drone show or a projection display will take place every year at a fixed time. Only the programme announced for your visit can establish those details.

Do not expect a terrace seat, meal, toilet, private guide or transfer simply because a booking is described as “premium”. The written inclusions should identify each service.

A boat ticket does not include temple entry or priority darshan unless separately specified. Likewise, a hotel’s ordinary complimentary boat transfer is not automatically a Dev Diwali sightseeing cruise.

Do not count on an app-based cab, e-rickshaw or coach collecting you beside the ghats after the event. Plan the return walk and permitted pickup before the evening begins.

Photography should respect worshippers and local instructions. Avoid obstructing steps or moving dangerously for a better view. Do not fly a personal drone without the permissions applicable to the location and date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch Dev Diwali without booking a boat?

Yes. Depending on permitted access, you can watch from the ghats or a suitable terrace. Public viewing does not automatically provide reserved seating, personal space or an easy exit. Choose the arrangement that suits your mobility and the experience you want.

Is a ghat hotel the best choice?

For a trip focused on Dev Diwali, it is our preferred choice when its access suits the guest. Staying near the river can make the evening easier, particularly after disembarkation. Check the specific property and boarding route before deciding.

Can I arrive on the same day?

Yes, but arrive early enough to reach your hotel and prepare well before reporting. We strongly prefer arrival at least one day earlier. An afternoon arrival leaves little room for delays or restrictions.

Is the boat ride exactly four hours?

We normally plan around four hours aboard, within an evening programme of approximately 4:00–8:30 PM. The confirmed reporting time and actual river movement govern the experience. Hotel transfer time is additional.

How far will I have to walk?

Plan for around one kilometre or more at many ghat approaches, each way between the riverfront and the permitted vehicle point. Your exact distance depends on the hotel, boarding point, vehicle and restrictions.

Can our Tempo Traveller take us to the boat?

We do not recommend it for the festival evening. Larger vehicles are stopped farther away. A separate plan using smaller vehicles where allowed, followed by the necessary walk, is usually more practical.

Does a confirmed boat mean sailing is guaranteed whatever happens?

Your confirmed allocation is guaranteed under your booking. Operation still follows official permission, river conditions and safety instructions. Your confirmation should explain the terms applicable if an authority changes or stops operations.
