Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is outside central Varanasi. For most city hotels, allow roughly 45–75 minutes, depending on traffic and location. A road-accessible hotel is straightforward; a riverfront or old-city hotel may require walking, porter assistance or a daytime hotel boat transfer. For late arrivals, the final approach changes significantly.
First understand where your hotel is
“Varanasi hotel” can mean a modern property in Cantonment, a hotel near Assi, a guesthouse around Godowlia or a heritage property directly on the Ganges. These locations may look close together on a map but require very different arrival arrangements.
Before booking the transfer, ask one question: Can the vehicle actually reach the hotel entrance?
Road-accessible hotels
Hotels in Cantonment, Nadesar, much of Sigra and other main-road areas are the simplest. The car normally reaches the entrance, luggage is unloaded directly and late-night arrivals are relatively easy. This can be particularly useful for families, senior travellers and guests with several large bags.
Assi Ghat area
Assi offers a useful balance between river access and road access. Many hotels can be reached quite closely by vehicle, although the final few minutes depend on the exact lane. It is also convenient for BHU, Sankat Mochan and southern Varanasi.
Dashashwamedh Ghat and Godowlia
Private cars do not drive down to Dashashwamedh Ghat. Traffic barriers around Godowlia control the final approach and guests normally complete the last section on foot. During busy evenings, festivals and major pilgrimage dates the vehicle restriction can begin farther away.
For an old-city hotel, the correct vehicle meeting point is more useful than the hotel's Google Maps pin.
Riverfront hotels work differently
Some of Varanasi's most atmospheric hotels sit directly beside the Ganges. Their location is part of the experience, but it also means that normal door-to-door car access is not possible. Depending on the property, time of arrival and river conditions, the final part may be by hotel boat or on foot with porter assistance.
Guleria Kothi
Guleria Kothi is directly on the river and does not have conventional car access. For suitable daytime arrivals, the hotel can coordinate its boat transfer according to river conditions and operating hours. If boat operations are suspended, access switches to a porter-assisted walk from the closest practical road point.
Avantika by the Ganges, Varanasi
The correct property name is Avantika by the Ganges, Varanasi. Because it is an old-city riverfront property, the airport vehicle does not simply drive to the hotel entrance. During normal daytime operations, hotel-arranged river access can form part of the arrival, subject to the hotel's current procedure and river conditions.
BrijRama Palace
BrijRama Palace stands directly above Darbhanga Ghat. Its river location means the preferred daytime arrival is normally coordinated by boat from a road-accessible embarkation point such as Namo Ghat or another point advised by the hotel for that day. Road access to the palace entrance itself is not possible.
Important: arrivals after approximately 8:00 PM
Guests should not plan on a hotel boat transfer after approximately 8:00 PM. For late arrivals, we use a road-and-walking plan and coordinate with the hotel porter team in advance.
Guleria Kothi after 8 PM
The vehicle is taken towards Maidagin Crossing, subject to the traffic barriers operating that night. Guleria Kothi's porters or representative meet the guests, take responsibility for the luggage and escort the guests on foot through the old-city lanes to the hotel.
Avantika by the Ganges after 8 PM
The late-arrival procedure is similar. Guests are brought towards Maidagin Crossing, where hotel porters meet them and assist with luggage for the pedestrian approach to Avantika by the Ganges.
BrijRama Palace after 8 PM
For BrijRama Palace, the practical late-night approach is generally towards Godowlia Crossing. The hotel's porter team meets the guests there and assists with luggage for the walk towards the palace. The exact drop point can move with police barricading.
Why Namo Ghat matters
Namo Ghat combines much easier road access with direct access to the Ganges, so it has become an important operational point for certain riverfront hotel transfers. When river conditions and hotel timings permit, a road transfer to Namo Ghat followed by the hotel's boat can turn the arrival into part of the Varanasi experience.
But boat transfers are never guaranteed by the calendar
River operations can be restricted or suspended during high water, monsoon conditions, adverse weather or by local administration order. A complimentary hotel boat service cannot operate when navigation has been closed. A well-planned transfer therefore always has a road-and-walking alternative.
Luggage matters more than most travellers expect
A large suitcase that is easy to wheel through an airport feels very different on ghat steps or in a narrow pedestrian lane. If you are staying on the riverfront, lighter and more compact luggage is easier. Travellers on a long India journey with several large cases should tell the hotel or tour operator in advance so the porter arrangement can be planned properly.
Travelling with senior citizens
A riverfront hotel may be only a few hundred metres from the nearest road on a map but still involve stairs, uneven lanes and a crowded pedestrian approach. Before booking, check the actual walking distance, number of steps, lift availability, boat boarding point and what happens if the boat is not operating.

Arriving during Ganga Aarti time
A late-afternoon flight should not be combined with an unrealistically tight evening plan. The guest still has to disembark, collect luggage, meet the driver, drive into Varanasi and then complete the final old-city approach. Traffic grows much heavier as people move towards the river for the evening ceremony.
If the Ganga Aarti on arrival day is important, choose the flight and hotel with that objective in mind.
Should you pre-book the airport transfer?
For a normal road-accessible hotel, an airport taxi can work well. A pre-arranged private transfer becomes particularly useful when a porter or boat has to be coordinated, the guest is arriving after dark, there are elderly travellers, or the driver must navigate temporary traffic barriers. The value is not simply the car; it is having the final kilometre organised.
Airport directly to Sarnath
If the flight lands early enough, a direct visit to Sarnath before entering the old city can be practical. It depends on arrival time, monument hours and luggage arrangements, but it can save backtracking for short stays.
The one question every traveller should ask
Ask the hotel: “Can my vehicle reach your entrance? If not, exactly where will I meet your boat or porter?” Then give the hotel your flight number and expected arrival time. This simple exchange prevents many arrival problems.
How we plan an arrival
For our private transfers we collect the flight number, expected landing time, hotel, guest mobile or WhatsApp number, passenger count, approximate luggage and any mobility concern. We then establish the practical vehicle drop point and coordinate the hotel representative, porter or boat where required.
Boat transfers, vehicle access and pedestrian routes remain subject to water levels, local administration orders, traffic barriers and each hotel's current operating procedure. Reconfirm close to arrival.
