How much walking is involved at Nalanda?
Nalanda is an open archaeological site with uneven areas, so moderate walking should be expected. The route can be shortened. The main consideration is not distance alone but the open archaeological ground, occasional uneven surfaces and the heat during the middle of the day. We normally keep the vehicle as close as local access allows, build in pauses and avoid adding unnecessary stops when someone prefers an easier day.
Is Rajgir worth more than a quick stop?
Yes. Rajgir has enough to justify proper time, particularly for Buddhist and historical interests. Rajgir is not just a transfer stop between Bodh Gaya and Nalanda; the hills, Vulture’s Peak area and Buddhist associations deserve time if that history matters to you. In practice, we decide the depth of the visit according to the day’s driving time and the guest’s walking comfort rather than trying to include every site.
Do you use local guides?
For normal private travel, good local English-speaking guides can be arranged in Bodh Gaya and Rajgir/Nalanda. For us, the value of a guide is not only in dates and history but in handling the practical side of a visit—where to enter, what is open, how much time to allow and when a route should be changed. We prefer guides who can read the guest’s interest and pace instead of delivering the same memorised commentary to everyone.
Can this journey suit mature travellers?

In practice, we judge this more by the surfaces, crowds and access points than by kilometres alone, because those are what usually make a sightseeing day tiring. Is an overnight in Patna always necessary?
No. Depending on flights, trains and the onward route, Patna can sometimes be used mainly as a transport point. We use Patna according to the transport logic of the journey, not simply because an itinerary template says an overnight must be there. If your flight or train timing allows a comfortable onward connection, the night can sometimes be removed; if not, staying avoids an unnecessarily risky or exhausting travel day.
