Treat Dev Deepawali as a special operation
On Dev Deepawali, the normal Varanasi rulebook changes. Roads can close much earlier, police barricades move, walking distances increase and the river becomes the focus of enormous demand. We do not plan the evening as if it were an ordinary Ganga Aarti visit. The guest’s hotel location, physical comfort, chosen viewpoint and return route all need to be decided in advance, with a backup plan in case the administration changes boat or access rules on the day.
Boat arrangements need the most caution
The river can offer a spectacular view of illuminated ghats, but no responsible operator should describe a Dev Deepawali boat as absolutely guaranteed months in advance. Boat movement, boarding points and permitted operating windows remain subject to the local administration and river conditions. Choose your viewing style before you arrive
Some travellers want the widest possible river panorama, while others prefer a fixed seated position because they are older, travelling with children or uncomfortable in dense crowds. A balcony, designated seating area or land-based viewpoint may suit one guest better than a boat. There is no universal best option. Expect to walk and to wait
Even guests with a private car should expect a substantial pedestrian component. Vehicles are usually stopped well before the busiest riverfront approaches, and crowd-control barriers can lengthen the route. A riverfront hotel sounds ideal, but access to it may become complicated during the festival. A city hotel with easier road access may be simpler before the event yet require a longer walk afterwards. Neither is automatically better. We look at the exact property, not just the neighbourhood name, and decide how luggage, arrival, sightseeing and the festival evening will work together.
Our practical advice for first-time visitors
Arrive in Varanasi at least a day before the festival if possible. Do not schedule your flight or train to reach the city only a few hours before the evening programme. Keep the daytime sightseeing light, have lunch early, rest, and start the approach before the crowd reaches its peak. Dev Deepawali is memorable precisely because the whole riverfront participates; enjoying it requires patience as well as good planning.
